Community Relations & Communications Make a Good Morning Blend

For the past two decades, Gardere Wynne Sewell LLP, one of the Southwest’s largest law firms, has hosted the Annual Gardere MLK Jr. Oratory Competition – a tradition that encourages the community to remember and pay tribute to the late civil rights leader’s legacy. This event highlights the cultural diversity of the community, while recognizing and encouraging the development of research, writing and oratory skills of hundreds of Dallas and Houston elementary school children. This year, students delivered original three-to-five minute speeches answering the question, “What would Dr. King say in his campaign speech if he were running for president this year?”

Since its establishment in 1993 in Dallas, and four years later in Houston, the competition has grown significantly in popularity and recognition, achieving considerable local and national coverage. Through the support of a robust media relations strategy implemented by The Company, the 2016 Gardere MLK Jr. Oratory Competition was covered by roughly 130 media outlets, including Good Morning America, Huffington Post, Houston Chronicle and Dallas Morning News, and garnered more than 230 million impressions.

The Company is proud to support Gardere each year and was pleased to secure a segment on Good Morning America’s MLK Jr. Day morning broadcast. Coordinating this segment on the country’s leading morning news program was a notable achievement for the event and for our team. We look forward to continuing our partnership with Gardere and growing this incredible tradition in the community for years to come.
